Getting ready to travel overseas? Don’t forget to prep your phone before you leave. International travel brings amazing experiences, but staying connected can quickly become stressful and expensive if you don’t plan ahead.

Here’s how to make sure your phone is ready for smooth use while you explore new places.

1. Check Your Carrier’s International Options

Start by contacting your mobile provider. Most carriers offer international roaming plans, but the cost and coverage vary widely. Some offer daily passes, while others provide monthly international plans.

Ask about data limits, text and call pricing, and the countries included in the plan. If the cost seems too high, consider using a different option, like a local SIM card or an eSIM.

2. Make Sure Your Phone Is Unlocked

If you want to use a foreign SIM card, your phone needs to be unlocked. Call your carrier to confirm whether your device is locked to their network. If it is, ask if they can unlock it.

Many providers will unlock your phone once you’ve paid it off or fulfilled your contract. An unlocked phone gives you more flexibility when choosing local or international plans.

3. Explore Local SIM Cards or eSIMs

Buying a local SIM card often gives you better rates for data and calls while abroad. You’ll find them at airports, mobile shops, and convenience stores. Be sure to bring your passport, as some countries require ID to buy a SIM.

We highly recommend using an eSIM from an online provider that allows you to switch countries without paying extra or changing numbers. Examples of top options include Holafly and Alosim.

Newer phones also support eSIMs, which you can download online before your trip. These options save money and let you use your phone like a local.

4. Set Up Wi-Fi Calling and Messaging Apps

To reduce your need for a cell connection, rely on Wi-Fi whenever possible. Download apps like WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram for texting and calling over Wi-Fi. Enable Wi-Fi calling in your phone settings if your carrier supports it.

This feature lets you make calls using any Wi-Fi network instead of relying on expensive roaming charges.

5. Download Maps and Travel Tools in Advance

Avoid international data charges by downloading offline maps using apps like Google Maps or Maps.me. You can also save translation tools, currency converters, and travel guides directly to your phone.

Prep your digital tools before takeoff to navigate and communicate even without a strong connection.

6. Pack the Right Accessories

Don’t forget your charging gear. Bring a universal power adapter that works with outlets in your destination country. Consider packing a portable charger, too, especially if you’ll spend long days sightseeing.

If you use a local eSIM, you may need a SIM tool or paperclip to open your SIM tray.

7. Turn Off Unnecessary Background Data

Before your flight, adjust your phone settings to avoid surprise charges. Turn off automatic app updates and restrict background data usage.

You can do this in your phone’s settings by enabling low data mode or switching to airplane mode until you connect to Wi-Fi.

Stay Connected, the Smart Way

Traveling internationally doesn’t mean you have to lose touch with home or break the bank on data fees. By preparing your phone before your trip, you’ll stay connected, save money, and focus on the adventure ahead.
