Avoid Moisture Damage from Sudden Temperature Changes This Summer

Summer is a great time to travel, explore, and spend more time outdoors, but it can also be a risky season for your electronics. One often-overlooked threat during the warmer months is moisture damage caused by sudden temperature changes.

At The Lab, we see this issue more often than you’d think, especially with smartphones, laptops, and other portable devices.

Here’s what you need to know to keep your tech safe and dry this summer!

Why Temperature Changes Matter

When you move a device from a cold, air-conditioned environment to a hot, humid one, or vice versa, condensation can form inside the device. Think of what happens when you take a cold drink outside on a hot day.

That same moisture buildup can happen inside your phone or laptop if it experiences a quick shift in temperature.

Even if you don’t see moisture on the surface, condensation inside your device can lead to:

  • Short circuits
  • Corrosion of internal components
  • Screen fogging or discoloration
  • Permanent hardware failure

Common Situations That Put Devices At Risk

You may not realize how often your devices go through these sudden changes. Some common examples include:

  • Taking your phone out of an air-conditioned car or building into the hot summer air
  • Using a laptop poolside after it’s been stored in a cool space
  • Storing electronics in cold luggage and using them immediately in a hot climate

How To Prevent Moisture Damage

The good news is that moisture damage from temperature shifts is avoidable with a few simple precautions:

Let Devices Adjust Gradually

If your phone or laptop has been in a cold space, give it 10 to 15 minutes to warm up to room temperature before using it in a hot environment.

Use A Protective Case Or Sleeve

Insulated sleeves help moderate the temperature change and reduce exposure to humidity.

Avoid Using Electronics Immediately

After a big temperature change, powering on a device while condensation is present can increase the risk of internal damage.

Avoid Direct Sun

Don’t leave your phone or devices in a hot car or direct sunlight. The heat alone is risky, but combined with humidity, it can quickly lead to moisture buildup.

Use Silica Gel Packs While Traveling

Toss a few into your bag or laptop case to absorb excess moisture during temperature transitions.

If Your Device Shows Signs of Moisture Damage:

  • Turn it off immediately
  • Do not plug it in or attempt to charge it
  • Gently dry the surface and let it rest in a cool, dry place
  • Bring it to The Lab for a professional inspection

The sooner we can take a look, the better chance we have of preventing long-term damage.

Protect Your Tech All Season Long

Your devices are part of your daily life, so don’t let temperature swings take them out of commission. Whether you’re traveling, working remotely, or relaxing at home this summer, keep moisture damage in mind.
